The Soaring Eagle Support Society is back with its second Duck Derby Race, and ducks are still available.
On Aug. 19, a flood of rubber ducks will be released in Eastlink Park to race in multiple heats, with the winners competing in a final showdown.
Each heat winner will receive $125, and the first-, second-, and third-place champions will win $3,000, $1,500 and $1,000, respectively.
The heats begin at 12:45 p.m., but before that, you can fill up at the barbecue starting at 11:30 a.m. Funds raised from the races and the barbecue will support the Soaring Eagle Support Society.
To participate, ducks can be purchased from the organization’s location on Caxton Street or from Hadley, Asher and Elliot’s Candy Emporium.
The Soaring Eagle Support Society is a collaborative effort that aims to provide temporary, transitional residency and other supports, such as shower, laundry and food services, to vulnerable community members.
“The whole idea is to help people transition their life circumstances into something better, something more stable, something more citizen-like,” explains Executive Director Cindy Gurney.
Operating out of a former motel, the organization recently applied to have its parcel rezoned after its use was found to be noncompliant with its current zoning.
Whitecourt town council held a public hearing on the matter at the end of July, and it returns for a vote tonight, Aug. 18.
Gurney thanks the town for its patience while the organization demonstrated its efforts and operations, but also apologizes for the inconvenience of the ongoing situation. She looks forward to a resolution.
