A brewhouse is coming to downtown Whitecourt.
At Whitecourt town council’s Dec. 20 meeting, council approved a development permit for the Garage Brewhouse and Pub, to be located at 5015 – 50 Ave.
The land is currently zoned as Direct Control, which means that council is the final authority on what businesses can move into the property.
The site is the former home of the Downtown Automall, which moved its business to Kepler Street and became the Whitecourt Automall.
The development permit notes that the developer plans to renovate the interior into a brewery with seating and washrooms. The permit also notes there is room to add an outdoor patio, should the developer choose.
Councillor Serena LaPointe enthusiastically approved the permit, calling it a wonderful addition to Whitecourt’s downtown.
“To utilize the name of what was in there previous is just smart, and I look forward to seeing what they do with it,” said LaPointe.
Mayor Tom Pickard says that all of council is behind the project.
“We think it will be part of a revitalization. It will bring more people to the downtown core and we all agreed that it was a great initiative by the group that is bringing this brewhouse to Whitecourt,” said Pickard.
It is unknown when the developer will begin construction.
