November is Family Violence Prevention Month, and the Whitecourt Family Violence Initiative (FVI) is hosting a number of events to mark the occasion and raise awareness.
On Nov. 1, Whitecourt residents are encouraged to turn on their outside porch lights or put up purple glow sticks to “shine a light” on the issue of family violence.
Glow sticks are available for free at the Allan and Jean Millar Centre.
Nov. 4 is a day for business connections; representatives of the FVI will distribute resource packages to local businesses to help raise awareness of the issue and available resources.
On Nov. 6, Whitecourt FVI officials will turn their efforts to the Whitecourt Wolverines game. The Wolverines host the Lloydminster Bobcats for a 7 p.m. puck drop that night, and the FVI will be in attendance to distribute purple ribbons and bracelets.
The 30 days of awareness come to a head on Nov. 19 for the 22nd Annual Candlelight Vigil in remembrance of those lost to domestic violence, and as a show of support for survivors.
Presenters will share stories and statistics highlighting the realities of domestic violence and the importance of raising awareness. The vigil will conclude with a candlelit walk. It takes place at 6:30 p.m. outside Twice is Nice.
