Sept. 30 marks Canada’s National Day for Truth and Reconciliation (NDTR), also Orange Shirt Day, and the Whitecourt Indigenous Friends Society has a special event planned to honour the occasion.
At Festival Park in Whitecourt, the society will host an event from about 5-7 p.m.
It all begins with an opening ceremony, including a smudge, prayers and guest speakers.
At 5:30 p.m., the group will walk around the pond, then enjoy a barbecue at 5:45 p.m.
A round dance and giveaways are also scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
The Government of Canada says NDTR is dedicated to honouring residential school survivors, their families and communities, and to recognizing the lasting impacts of Canada’s residential school system.
