The Whitecourt Wolverines had a shaky start to the pre-season with two losses over the weekend.
They had two matchups against the Camrose Kodiaks, who came out on top with 5-2 on Friday, Sept. 4, and 7-4 on Saturday.
September 4
The Camrose Kodiaks opened Friday’s game with a goal at 4:01 for 1-0.
At 7:58, Kodiak Parker Sanderson earned a high sticking minor, putting the Wolverines on a power play. Whitecourt’s Braxton Alaric tied it 1-1 on the power play with assistance from Justin Pichette and Mason Russell.
Camrose netted two more in the second frame for 3-1, before jumping to 4-1 with another at the start of period three.
At 8:14, Wolverines Memphis Adeniken and Kyle Tucker assisted Landon Horiachka with the team’s fifth goal of the night to narrow Camrose’s lead to 4-2.
The Kodiaks scored once more at 13:27 for the 5-2 victory.
September 5
Camrose started Saturday’s action again, with two goals in the first period for a quick 2-0 lead.
Wolverine Jett Quaschnick picked up the momentum in the second frame, netting an unassisted goal at 1:34 to narrow the Kodiaks’ lead to 2-1, but Camrose answered with two more at 5:00 and 8:30 for 4-1.
Frame three saw Whitecourt’s Kaiden Beniuk boost the Wolverines to just two points behind the Kodiaks, at 4-2. He was assisted by Olivier Tetrault.
The Kodiaks fire back with another two goals again, jumping to 6-2, before Sawyer Holmes netted another for Whitecourt at 10:31. The helpers went to Parker Fitzgerald and Justin Pichette.
Now at a 6-3 lead, the Kodiaks scored at 11:38 for 7-3.
At 17:12, Camrose’s Bode Edwards receiving an interference minor, giving Whitecourt’s Jake Banicevic a chance to net a power play goal with 1:04 left in the game. Kaiden Beniuk and Landon Horiachka assisted in securing the final 7-4 score.
