Edson celebrates Wop May Day and Alberta Day Aug. 29

Edson’s Wop May Day and Alberta Day celebrations take place this Saturday, Aug. 29.

This free event features food trucks, carnival games, field games, face painting, a balloon artist and much more.

The event kicks off at 1 p.m., and at 1:15 p.m., the Western Thistles band begins the live entertainment.

There is also a pie-eating contest, which runs from 3:15-4:15 p.m.

Attendees can also come in their best 1919 picnic attire for a chance to win prizes.

The event will be held at RCMP Centennial Park.

The detailed schedule is as follows:

  • 1:00-1:15 p.m.: Introduction, land acknowledgement, Indigenous blessing, dignitary speeches.
  • 1:15-1:45 p.m.: Entertainment by the Western Thistles.
  • 1:45-2:30 p.m.: Field games.
  • 2:30-3:15 p.m.: Entertainment by the Western Thistles.
  • 3:15-4:15 p.m.: Pie-eating contest.
  • 4:15-5:00 p.m.: Entertainment by the Western Thistles.

Wop May Day celebrates Lieutenant Wilfred Reid “Wop” May, a pioneering Canadian aviator with a strong connection to Alberta. The activities also celebrate Alberta Day, the founding of our province. Alberta Day is official on Sept. 1.
