The Grande Yellowhead Public School Division (GYPSD) has appointed Ryan Maguhn to the position of assistant superintendent of learning services, effective as of September.
Maguhn is stepping into the role from his current position as principal of Harry Collinge High School (HCHS) in Hinton.
Born and raised in the Hinton community, the division says he brings “a wealth of local insight, academic rigour and diverse instructional experience to the superintendent’s team.”
He obtained an undergraduate degree from Bemidji State University in Minnesota before earning a master of education from the University of Calgary.
Officials say Maguhn’s education career began in 2005. He worked in Hinton, then Fort Frances, Ont., before returning to Hinton in 2016. At that point, he joined GYPSD as a high school English and social studies teacher at HCHS before eventually stepping into the role of assistant principal. He also served as principal of Crescent Valley School in 2022 before returning to HCHS as principal in 2025.
Throughout his career, he has focused on establishing strong, meaningful relationships with students, staff and parents, the division says.
“The cornerstone of effective teaching and educational leadership is the cultivation of strong, authentic relationships with students, families and staff,” comments Maguhn. “I am incredibly honoured to take on this divisional role. My focus will remain steadfast on supporting the people and the innovative work that drive student success across all GYPSD communities.”
In addition to his educational experience, Maguhn also served as a town councillor for 13 years, as a former Town of Hinton firefighter and as a high school volleyball coach. In his spare time, he enjoys scale model work, 3D printing and baseball, though he says his greatest joy comes from the love and support of his wife, Nicole, and son, Marek.
