The Grande Yellowhead Public School Division (GYPSD) has appointed Roy Amalu as its new director of finance, effective Aug. 1.
The division says Amalu brings more than 20 years of financial leadership and governance experience across the public sector, municipal government, construction and private industry. Currently the director of finance for the Town of High Level, he provides strategic oversight for financial planning, municipal budgeting, treasury management and capital planning.
“We are thrilled to welcome Roy to the GYPSD leadership team,” said Kurt Scobie, superintendent of schools. “His extensive background in fiscal stewardship, regulatory compliance and system improvement will be invaluable as we continue to manage our resources responsibly to support student success across the division.”
Among Amalu’s 20 years of experience, he spent nine years as a senior auditor for the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, where he led internal audits, compliance assessments and operational reviews. He also spent 11 years as controller at Bird Construction, where he managed a team of 27 and oversaw major operations across Fort McMurray, Edmonton and Calgary.
GYPSD says he has also served on numerous boards and audit committees, chairing the Fort McMurray chapter of the Certified General Accountants Association of Alberta and the Finance and Audit Committee for the Wood Buffalo Housing Corporation.
“I am passionate about advancing sound governance and fiscal excellence to help organizations achieve sustainable, long-term success,” commented Amalu, who shared the following Einstein quote: “‘Not everything that counts can be counted, and not everything that can be counted counts.’ I look forward to collaborating with the board, senior administration and school communities at GYPSD.”
Amalu holds a master of science in business information systems from the University of Bolton, bachelor’s degrees in applied accounting and accountancy and is pursuing a PhD. The division says he also holds multiple internationally recognized professional designations, including Fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants, Chartered Professional Accountant, Certified Risk Management Assurance and Chartered Accountant.
GYPSD says he will relocate to Edson to step into his new role at the start of August.
