Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has issued a special weather statement for Barrhead, Lac Ste. Anne, Woodlands and Yellowhead County, as well as the M.D. of Greenview.
The ECCC says conditions are expected to be favourable for funnel cloud development this afternoon and evening.
As the ECCC explains, these types of clouds are generated by weak rotations under rapidly growing clouds or weak thunderstorms. The rotation does not normally pose any danger near the ground, but officials say the rotation could intensify and become a weak landspout tornado.
If conditions become more favourable to the development of landspout tornadoes, ECCC officials say they will issue watches and warnings to that effect.
Residents in the area should take funnel cloud sightings seriously. If one develops nearby, be prepared to take shelter.
