This Sunday is National Indigenous Peoples Day, and in the Woodlands County region, residents can celebrate with the Whitecourt Indigenous Friends Society.
From 12-5 p.m. on June 21, community members can participate in culture and connection at the Blue Ridge Recreation Area.
Organizers say the event will feature meaningful cultural activities, special events and a celebration honouring Indigenous traditions and heritage.
The event agenda is as follows:
- 12:00 p.m.: Lunch (free barbecue)
- 1:00-3:00 p.m.: Tales in the Tipi
- 1:00-3:00 p.m.: Face painting with Daiana Wedel
- 1:00-3:00 p.m.: Live entertainment by Métis Country
- 3:00-4:30 p.m.: Mini powwow/Métis jiggers
- 4:30-5:00 p.m.: Round dance
Indigenous artisans and a food truck selling Indigenous cuisine will also be on site. Attendees need to bring cash for these purchases, as no debit machines will be available.
Attendees should also bring lawn chairs for seating.
