Ground has officially been broken for a US$155 million computing facility coming to Fox Creek.
The project is headed by Bitdeer Technologies Group, a Singapore-based company embarking on its first mission in Canada.
Representatives from Bitdeer, the Town of Fox Creek, the M.D. of Greenview, the Government of Alberta and other stakeholders gathered on June 1 for an official groundbreaking ceremony.
“Today’s groundbreaking marks the beginning of our long-term presence in Canada,” said Jihan Wu, chairman and CEO of Bitdeer. “We chose Alberta — and Fox Creek in particular — because it is one of the few places in the world that combines regulatory confidence, openness to industrial investment, energy resources and a skilled workforce that projects like ours require.”
Officials from Bitdeer said the facility will primarily be used for Bitcoin mining, with the ability to support future high-performance computing workloads, such as AI.
Under Alberta’s bring-your-own-generation framework, the data centre is to be integrated with a 101 MW natural gas power plant so it can power itself. It has also been approved for a 99 MW interconnection to the Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) grid to support the municipality’s power during times of peak demand or grid stress.
The roughly C$214 million investment is expected to create 300 temporary construction jobs and 30 permanent jobs, including entry-level positions suited to new graduates.
“I am proud to welcome Bitdeer to our community, an incredible growing region,” commented Alberta Minister of Forestry and Parks and MLA for Central Peace–Notley, Todd Loewen. “This project means construction work, permanent jobs and procurement opportunities for local people, and it adds an exciting new industry alongside the resources sector that has long defined our area.”
Bitdeer said priority will be placed on Alberta-based contractors and local hiring for operational roles as it becomes a new pillar of the regional economy.
“With a focus on workforce training and skilled employment, responsible development and their willingness to work closely with our communities, this project has the potential to create long-term economic benefit and represents a breakthrough in economic and workforce diversity for the region,” commented M.D. of Greenview Reeve Ryan Ratzlaff. “We appreciate Bitdeer’s commitment to working with Alberta-based businesses and investing in the communities that support this development.”
The facility site is about 1.5 km from the Town of Fox Creek, within the M.D. of Greenview, and is expected to have a footprint of 7.7 hectares.
It’s expected to use a closed-loop dry cooling system, as opposed to water-based cooling, which the company said should not need to withdraw from nearby bodies of water. The company also stated that environmental, air quality and noise compliance work is ongoing, with active monitoring planned once the facility is operational.
The project was initially announced in February 2025 after Bitdeer acquired the site from the original proponent, Kiwetinohk Energy Corp. The data centre is expected to be energized and operational by Q2 of 2027.
Bitdeer stated the project has been approved by the Alberta Utilities Commission and Alberta Environment and Protected Areas, and is subject to ongoing oversight from those groups, as well as Alberta Lands, the AESO and other provincial authorities.
It also said it has engaged transparently with Fox Creek, the M.D. of Greenview and First Nations with traditional territories in the project area, including through a community open house in Fox Creek on April 27, 2026.
Fox Creek Mayor Sheila Gilmour commented, “Fox Creek has a strong history of working collaboratively with companies that invest in our community, and Bitdeer has demonstrated that same approach from the outset—engaging with the municipality, listening, and keeping residents informed. Council appreciates the positive working relationship established to date with Bitdeer as a new corporate presence in our community.”
The company also has facilities in Norway, Bhutan, Texas, Washington and Tennessee.
