A wildfire that prompted an evacuation in Woodlands County at the beginning of May was also an opportunity for regional partners to show their support and dedication to the community.
On May 11, an out-of-control wildfire broke out in Woodlands County, southeast of Whitecourt. At the time, the Whitecourt RMCP’s Traffic Unit was participating in National Road Safety Week through enhanced traffic enforcement.
As the wildfire escalated, officials say the unit shifted its priorities to assist partner agencies with resident evacuations from over 100 homes.
“It was a very busy week for the Alberta RCMP Traffic – Whitecourt Unit as members balanced proactive enforcement with an unexpected emergency response,” commented Sgt. Greg Anderson of the Alberta RCMP Traffic-Whitecourt Unit. “We are always dedicated to the community and are glad to help, especially during times of need.”
The unit also conducted high-visibility patrols of the reduced speed zone on Highway 43 to assist in safely moving emergency personnel and equipment through the area.
While the evacuation was in effect, Woodlands County staff reported concerns about the well-being of pets and livestock left in the evacuation zone. To address the concern, officials say the Whitecourt Traffic Unit partnered with county staff and other Whitecourt RCMP members to organize supplies and coordinate care efforts.
County officials dubbed this project “The Paw Patrol,” which saw members visit multiple residences to feed and provide water for animals, including cats, dogs, horses goats and chickens.
