Edson’s Malaynie Steffler has earned the prestigious provincial Archbishop Catholic Education Student Leadership Award.
The Grade 12 student at Holy Redeemer Catholic High School was recognized for her leadership and community involvement, including helping organize the school’s annual March 4A Cure fundraiser in support of cancer research.
Held annually since 2010, the campaign has raised more than $130,000 for the Alberta Cancer Foundation.
The lifelong Edson resident is also an active volunteer with Sacred Heart Catholic Church, helping organize potluck suppers, bazaars, Christmas events, Flilipino supper, food bank drives and Kinette hampers. At school, she regularly leads prayers over the intercom.
Holy Redeemer religion teacher Kim Haland describes Steffler as a strong leader and role model who leads by example.
Haland adds, Malaynie maintains her community leadership efforts all while also handling the normal Grade 12 homework and study load. “By her example, she helps others in their faith journey,” Haland said.
Malaynie is described as being highly academic and intends to take a year off and wants to travel since she is not ready to commit to post secondary education yet. However, she is interested in health care.
As well, she has represented the Catholic school community as part of the travel club and has visited Japan.
A recent achievement, after five years of drama, Malaynie directed her first one-act play, Sunday Dinner. Haland says she was outstanding in this role and went to provincials. Hers was one of 14 out of 155 plays that made it to that level.
