Citizens of Whitecourt were still able to get outside and have some Canada Day fun. Canada Day in Whitecourt was low key this year, as most of the planning was finalized before it was announced that COVID restrictions would be lifted.
As such, most of the celebrations were online this year. Mayor Maryann Chechik posted her address online at 10AM. In here address, she celebrated the easing of restrictions, noting that it’s been a rough 16 months, but is glad that everything is open again. She also suggested that the Canada Day fireworks may be postponed to later in the summer. The fireworks were canceled because of a fire ban in town.
With the easing of COVID restrictions, that meant that the water was flowing in the lazy river at Rotary Park in Westlock. Scores of people came down to cool their feet and try to avoid the sweltering temperatures.
The Royal Canadian Legion also went online to announce the winners of their Decorate for Canada Day contest. A special slideshow was produced displaying all the entries, and posted to the Royal Canadian Legion’s Facebook page.
