A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for a man accused of murder on the Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation last year.
Lee Yanetook Kootenhayoo, 26, a resident of Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation, is scheduled to find out in Alexis Court of Justice from Nov. 23-26, 2026, if his case has enough evidence to go to trial.
Kootenhayoo is charged with second-degree murder following an investigation into the death of 30-year-old Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation resident, Daylin Paul.
On April 6, 2025, Mayerthorpe RCMP were called to assist EMS with an unresponsive male, who they later declared deceased.
Members attended and spoke to witnesses who had been driving on the Northeast Road in Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation, when they observed a man on a snowbank on the side of the road.
Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit (MCU) took over the investigation and an autopsy was conducted by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Edmonton, who determined the injuries were consistent with a homicide.
On Sept. 17, 2025, Alberta RCMP MCU arrested and charged Lee Yanetook Kootenhayoo, who was brought before a justice of the peace and remanded into custody.
