Bugz and Beanerz Play Place and Creperie is the Whitecourt area’s only indoor playground, offering a two-storey play structure, soft play toddler area, bouncy house, party room, and delicious café.
Current owner Joanne Ruck took over Bugz and Beanerz in 2016. While her background was certainly not in business, her love of children has always been strong. She started taking kids in at the age of 19 and then later in life became a foster parent which she still is today. She also worked with a local youth agency and then later as an EA at a local school.
“I truly believe you get out what you put in,” she says. “If we didn’t have people who supported our community, we would not have much. I feel we have a rich community. We are rich with kindness and generosity. That to me is community and I am so happy to be a part of this one.” Supporting the community is helping it grow!”
Along with sitting on boards, volunteering, and shopping locally, Joanne supports the community through Bugz and Beanerz. The business has done collections for the Whitecourt Food Bank, Koats for Kids, and Whitecourt Christmas Hamper as well as having boxes that staff contributed to, helping support local families in need during the holiday season. They have also had days where $1 from admissions goes into a kitty and half of the donations are given to a local charity after three months. This month they collected for the West Yellowhead Pregnancy Care Centre.
Bugz and Beanerz also tries to offer playtimes and programs to suit the community. The have partnered with Parent Link to do a Parent’s Time Out by donating the meeting room for parents and play area for the kids.
“Supporting the community is helping it grow!” says Joanne.
Bugz and Beanerz takes pride in offering a unique atmosphere where parents can actually sit and visit with friends while the children play in a fun and safe environment.
