The Town of Edson will soon have a new fire chief, as Brad Milton is stepping down to pursue opportunities in the emergency management field.
Officials say Chief Milton joined the town in 2023 and guided the community through wildfire and evacuation events. The town says, “His leadership, professionalism, and steady presence during those challenging circumstances were invaluable.”
Chief Administrative Officer Christine Beveridge adds, “I would like to extend my sincere appreciation to our outgoing Fire Chief Brad Milton for his years of service and leadership. His dedication to the department, the organization, and the community has had a lasting impact and has helped position the fire service for continued success.”
As a result of his departure, Deputy Chief Joey Cherpin will be promoted to fire chief for the town.

Cherpin joined the department in 2024. Previously, he served in other municipalities as a fire chief, regional training officer and director of emergency management, the town reports. His 14 years of experience in protective services included time as a firefighter and training officer, and time in emergency services as a casual emergency medical responder.
“With the promotion of our Deputy Fire Chief Joey Cherpin to chief, we are confident that the strong and consistent leadership established within the department will continue, ensuring stability, professionalism, and an ongoing focus on public safety,” says Beveridge.
The town says Cherpin is completing a bachelor of applied business degree in emergency services from Lakeland College, and holds a certificate in emergency management from the Justice Institute of British Columbia. Additionally, he is a red seal carpenter and holds multiple technical certifications relevant to the firefighting industry.
