A jury trial has been scheduled for a local man charged with second-degree murder following a fatal shooting near the Whitecourt Airport over a year ago.
Matthew Charles Jackson, 44, of Whitecourt, is scheduled for a jury trial in Edmonton Court of King’s Bench on April 19, 2027. Jury selection will take place April 15, 2027.
Jackson was ordered to stand trial in Whitecourt Court of Justice on Dec. 3, 2025, following the completion of a preliminary hearing.
RCMP say it was just before 3:30 p.m. on Dec. 7, 2024, when they received a report of a shooting near the Whitecourt Airport and that the suspect was driving on Highway 43. After stopping the vehicle, police say they arrested and charged a suspect and located a firearm.
Mounties and EMS say when they arrived at the airport, they located a deceased victim who was identified as 44-year-old Whitecourt resident David Beauchesne. The Alberta Major Crimes Unit took over the investigation.
Jackson was taken before a Justice of the Peace and remanded into custody.
