A cold warning is in effect for much of northern Alberta.
A period of very cold wind chills near or below -40 C is expected today.
Conditions should moderate this afternoon for some areas, but Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) says very cold wind chills may return overnight through the rest of the week.
ECCC reminds residents to cover up, as frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, especially with wind chills present. Risks are greater for young children, older adults, people with chronic illnesses, people working or exercising outdoors and those without proper shelter.
Cold related symptoms to watch out for include:
- Shortness of breath
- Chest pain
- Muscle pain and weakness
- Numbness
- Colour change in fingers and toes
Officials also remind you that if it’s too cold for you to stay outside, it’s too cold for your pet too.
The warning is in effect for Woodlands County, near Whitecourt and Blue Ridge; Big Lakes County, near Swan Hills; Yellowhead County, near Edson; Barrhead County; and the Municipal District of Greenview, near Fox Creek.
Updates are available on the ECCC website.
