An amendment to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) Regulations on Identification and Traceability has been paused until more consultation can be done.
Last Wednesday, Peace River—Westlock MP Arnold Viersen shared that the postponement was announced following advocacy on Jan. 12 from Conservative MP’s and provincial organizations, such as the Alberta Beef Producers.
“The last thing farmers and ranchers in Alberta need is more red tape. While I am glad the CFIA has announced a pause, we would be better off if they scrapped the plan altogether,” said Viersen.
The proposed amendment would require farmers and ranchers to increase the level of detail in animal movements they need to report.
