Residents along the Yellowhead Highway between Evansburg and Wildwood are being evacuated tonight due to an out-of-control-wildfire in the area.
The fire is located 9 kilometers northwest of Evansburg. The province currently estimates the wildfire to be about 75 hectares in size, has crossed the Lobstick Creek, and is burning to the south. Firefighters are out in force to get the fire under control. There are currently six air tankers, four helicopters, eleven pieces of heavy equipment, and thirty two firefighters working to contain the blaze.
Residents along Highway 16, west of Highway 22 and up to Highway 16A, are being evacuated. This includes residents in the Lobstick Resort area. An evacuation centre is being set up at the Evansburg Arena in Evansburg. Highway 16 from Highway 22 to Wildwood is currently closed due to the wildfire.
