Two individuals have been arrested and charged by the Whitecourt RCMP following a successful bait trap operation.
In October, Whitecourt RCMP noted a rising number of vehicles being stolen in the area and placed a bait trap vehicle.
‘‘We want the public to know that we do hear their complaints and use the information from the public, as well as crime statistics and analytics, to further investigations and be more proactive in stopping property crime,’’ commented Staff Sgt. Matthew Clarke, Detachment Commander, Whitecourt RCMP. “We understand that everyone works hard for their possessions and want the public to know that we are hard at work, using varied techniques, to help mitigate these types of offences.”
On Nov. 5, the RCMP received an alert that the vehicle was in motion. Officers intercepted the vehicle, at which point police say the suspects unsuccessfully attempted to flee.
The two suspects were arrested, and an incidental search allegedly revealed a small amount of methamphetamine and bear spray.
As a result, a 26-year-old and a 22-year-old were both arrested and charged with:
- Possession of stolen property
- Possession of a controlled substance
- Possession of break and enter tools
- Possession of a weapon for dangerous purpose
The 26-year-old was also charged with:
- Theft of motor vehicle
- Flight from police
- Mischief under $5,000
- Traffic Safety Act violations (x2)
Both individuals were brought before a justice of the peace and released on conditions. They are to appear before the Alberta Court of Justice in Whitecourt on Nov. 25.
