For 53 years, Whitecourt residents have banded together to bring Christmas magic to families in the region in need, and the opportunity is back again this year.
The Whitecourt Christmas Hamper campaign is underway again and asks for toy donations for local families.
“It’s about bringing Christmas to children,” commented committee member Jenna Tschigerl. “That is really what our program is about. It’s about giving families a hand up during the holiday season.”
The initiative is seeking new but unwrapped toys, books, family games, teddy bears, gifts specifically for teens and gift cards in $25 denominations. These can be dropped off at a variety of donation bin locations, including the Woodlands County office, White Wall Wood, Re/Max Advantage, the Allan and Jean Millar Centre and Soctiabank.
Monetary donations are also welcome. Cheques can be dropped off at Re/Max Advantage on Main Street, or you can e-transfer mrsgundy@telus.net.
Families in Whitecourt, Blue Ridge and Woodlands County east, central and west can apply to receive a hamper. Organizers ask that one family member apply with all family knowledge, including Alberta Healthcare cards for all adults and dependents and proof of residency. Applications can be completed in person at the Whitecourt United Church on the following days:
- Thursday, Nov. 27: 6-9 p.m.
- Saturday, Nov. 29: 1-3 p.m.
- Thursday, Dec. 4: 6-9 p.m.
- Saturday, Dec. 6: 1-3 p.m.
The initiative was started by a small group of women intending to solve a need in the community and it’s now managed by nine community members and about 40 volunteers.
Last year, 113 families with 243 children received hampers.
