Edson’s town council recently accepted the Q2 RCMP report for information and approved multiple grant applications.
In the RCMP report, S/Sgt. Christian Delisle noted an increase in property theft over the quarter. This was primarily due to an increase in motor vehicle thefts and fraud.
For the RCMP, Q2 runs from July to September. Over that period, there were 23 vehicle thefts reported this year, compared to 15 for the same time period last year, a 53 per cent increase. Considering data back to 2021, however, rates are down eight per cent. Meantime, fraud rose to 29 counts, compared to 17 in 2024. This represents a 71 per cent increase over the last year and a 45 per cent increase since 2021.
According to the report, the town also saw a notable increase in the number of incidents of disturbing the peace or a breach of conditions. Thirty-one counts of a breach or failure to comply with conditions were recorded for the quarter, compared to 15 in 2024. That’s a 107 per cent increase since last year, and since 2021.
Incidents of disturbing the peace rose from 14 to 24, or by 71 per cent. Compared to 2021, however, that’s down 44 per cent.
Persons crime, on the other hand, trended down slightly. There were 50 crimes of this nature reported in Q2, down from 53 in 2024. While this is down six per cent compared to last year, it’s still a four per cent increase when comparing to 2021.
In the same meeting, council approved multiple grants from the September intake of the 2025 Community Grant Program. Eleven submissions were received and a total of $21,000 was granted to the following organizations:
- Edson & District Homelessness Task Force Society – $5,000 (Transitional Housing Development project)
