A Telus cell phone service outage is currently impacting multiple communities along Highway 43 and the surrounding area, including Whitecourt, Barrhead, Mayerthorpe, Woodlands County and Yellowhead County.
According to the Telus Service Status website, mobile data, text and calling services have been unavailable since 3:54 p.m. yesterday, Oct. 9. As of 6:30 a.m. today, the outage is still in effect.
The organization says the disruption is due to cable damage caused by a third party.
This outage may impact residents’ ability to contact 911 in case of emergency; however, Telus says 911 wireless fallback coverage is provided by an alternate carrier in the region. To enable a potential fallback connection beyond 911 access, the company says to set your mobile device network to “automatic.”
In the meantime, Telus is working to repair the cable damage, but there is no estimated timeline for restoration.
Updates are also available on the Telus website.
