With the municipal election creeping closer, there are some important dates to keep front of mind in the next couple weeks.
The Whitecourt and District Chamber of Commerce is hosting a candidate information session this week to give residents a chance to meet the people running for council. School board trustee candidates will also be in attendance at this free event.
The session takes place tonight, Oct. 1, from 7-9 p.m. at Blue Ridge Hall.
Advance voting takes place on two dates:
- Thursday, Oct. 16: 3-7 p.m.
- Saturday, Oct. 18: 12-4 p.m.
Voters in Divisions Two, Four and Five can cast advance votes at the Municipal Office (1 Woodlands Lane, Whitecourt). Voters in Division Seven should go to the Fort Assiniboine Regional Office (61053A Highway 33, Fort Assiniboine).
Election day is on Oct. 20 at the same location as advanced voting from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Residents who will be away for the election and advance voting days can apply to vote by special ballot until 4:30 p.m. on Oct. 6. Special ballot packages must be returned to the Returning Officer by 7 p.m. on Oct. 20. Applications are available online.
Electors are reminded to register to vote proactively to save yourself time the day of. If your name is not on the voter registry when you arrive, you will need to complete a form before casting your ballot.
You can register or check your registration status through Voterlink.
You’ll also need to bring one or more of the acceptable forms of ID required by the Local Authorities Election Act. Only one piece of photo identification provided by the Canadian government, whether federal, provincial, or local, that includes your name and current address is needed. If you do not have government-issued photo identification, you will need to provide two pieces of ID, both with your full name and one with your current address.
