County of Barrhead Enforcement Services are seeking public assistance in identifying a driver who allegedly fled an attempted traffic stop at a dangerous rate of speed.
On the evening of Sept. 19, a Barrhead County peace officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a black GMC Sierra on Range Road 40, north of Highway 18.
Officers say the vehicle accelerated, reaching a speed of 159 km/h on Range Road 40. It then turned eastbound onto Highway 18, continuing at an excessive rate of speed. It then reportedly entered the Town of Barrhead and reached speeds of 152 km/h on 53 Avenue near the Barrhead Composite High School. The vehicle then turned southbound onto 49 Street and allegedly failed to stop for a red light.
As per policy, the officer did not pursue the vehicle and notified Barrhead RCMP, who were nearby but unable to locate the vehicle. Both parties have been unable to identify the driver and available dash camera footage is not clear enough to determine the licence plate.
Now, authorities are turning to the public for assistance. Anyone who may have dash camera or surveillance footage from Sept. 19 between 10:32-10:40 p.m. is asked to review their footage for a black GMC Sierra or Chevrolet Silverado, likely model year 2019-2021, with an Alberta licence plate.
Specifically, officers believe residents and businesses along 53 Avenue from 60 Street to 49 Street, and along 49 Street from 53 Avenue to 49 Avenue, may have footage. Additionally, police say multiple vehicles were present on Range Road 40, Highway 18, 53 Avenue and 49 Street and drivers are encouraged to share any information they may have.
If you have any information to share, please contact the County of Barrhead Enforcement Services department via email at cpo@countybarrhead.ab.ca or via phone at 780-284-9757.
