The County of Barrhead is applying for funding from the Federation of Canadian Municipalities’ (FCM) Local Leadership for Climate Adaptation initiative.
The initiative is intended to help municipal governments plan for and respond to the impacts of weather-related events like wildfires, droughts or extreme heat and flooding.
The county has started work on the Parks and Open Spaces Master Plan, which is meant to guide the future development of open spaces and recreation areas. The plan includes natural assets such as parks, trails and municipal and environmental reserves.
If the FCM application is successful, the county says it could increase the scope of this project to address the value of natural assets, overall asset management, infrastructure resilience and emergency preparedness. In this case, it could receive up to $70,000 from the FCM in two disbursements during the project and the balance once it’s complete. The additional scope would extend the project into 2026 and 2027.
If unsuccessful in the application, the county will proceed with the original plan, with the project proceeding into 2026.
Barrhead County council approved the application for “Valuing Natural Assets for Climate Resilience in the County of Barrhead” during its regularly scheduled meeting at the beginning of October.
The project scope expected to be added if the application is successful is outlined in the graphs below and in the county council agenda.
