Grande Yellowhead Public School Division (GYPSD) bus drivers recently had a chance to show off their driving skills.
Late last month, GYPSD held its first annual Bus Roadeo at the central office grounds, hosted by the Transportation Department.
Participating drivers made their way around eight different tests or obstacles and had their performance judged by transportation staff, central office staff and other drivers.
Drivers were judged on their ability to:
- Approach and stop at railroad crossings
- Drive through narrow pylons or diminishing clearance
- Make a right turn to stay on a path
- Maintain a straight line without hitting a line of tennis balls
- Back up as close as possible to a marker without going over
- Stop within a specific measurement
- Weave their bus around pylons in an offset alley
- Pick up a student
The day included a barbecue lunch and prizes for the top three performers: Amanda Bangma, Joyce Kiland and Jen Rauch. These three drivers also qualified to represent GYPSD at the provincial event in Nisku earlier in June.
