Edson town council has passed first reading of a bylaw that would amend part of the Land Use Bylaw to redistrict a portion of land north of Highway 16 and west of 75 Street.
This amendment would redistrict the plot from an Urban Reserve district to a Business Industrial Minor district, which was requested to accommodate a potential outdoor storage facility.
Classified as a “storage facility, major” project, the site could be used for storing things like vehicles, heavy duty equipment, or pipes, but would not be used to store fuel, petrochemicals or toxic substances.
Town administration says the new zone is recommended based on the nature of the proposed subdivision and development, and in anticipation of future subdivisions and more intensive development.
A public hearing will be scheduled for further discussion, where more information will be presented.
First reading was also given to Bylaw 2326, which would amend the Land Use Bylaw for clarity, fence provisions and discretionary uses.
Officials say the changes would mostly be administrative in nature, such as correcting errors, clarifying definitions and introducing components that were missed during the initial adoption of Land Use Bylaw 2296 in 2024.
If passed, this would include would expanding the districts where barbed wire fencing is permitted and adding “government services” as a discretionary use to the Public Service district.
A public hearing for residents to share their thoughts on these changes is scheduled for June 17 at 7:00 p.m.
