Whitecourt Wolverines goaltender Zac Onyskiw has been named the Canadian Junior Hockey League’s Most Valuable Player for the 2024–25 season, capping off a dominant campaign that saw him collect a trio of major accolades.
The 20-year-old from Edmonton was previously named the AJHL’s Most Valuable Player— the first goalie to be named MVP in over a decade. He also earned both league and national Top Goaltender awards after leading the country in multiple statistical categories.
Onyskiw posted a 1.87 goals-against average and a .939 save percentage during the regular season—tops in the AJHL. His save percentage set a new league single-season record, while his GAA was the lowest in a full AJHL campaign since 2016–17.
In 37 appearances, he recorded a 26-7-1-3 mark and allowed two or fewer goals in 26 of those games. He did not suffer consecutive regulation losses at any point during the season.
From October 9 onward, Onyskiw helped fuel a late-season surge, going 22-4-2-2 in his final 30 starts as Whitecourt surged to a share of first place in the AJHL standings with 78 points.
Making 100 appearances in his AJHL career, he won 66 times and posted 10 shutouts, which were the most of any league goaltender over the past four seasons.
He now turns his attention to the next level, having committed to MacEwan University, where he’ll continue his hockey journey with the Griffins in Canada West.
