Crews say they received a call reporting a balcony fire in the Westhaven area at 1:44 p.m. and upon arrival at Hillcrest Court, found a working fire on a second-story balcony that was extending to a third-story balcony as well as the common attic space.
Crews on the first arriving engine deployed an attack line to the third floor to control the fire in the attic space and prevent it from spreading to other apartments. They also deployed a hand line to prevent the fire from spreading on the exterior of the building.
Following that, crews then deployed a second interior handline to the second floor, conducted primary and secondary searches and removed animals from the building. Officials say about 8-10 animals were rescued from the building and reunited with their owners with the assistance of Community Peace Officers.
Although crews were able to prevent the spread of the fire to the rest of the building, officials say the areas that did encounter the fire have been heavily damaged, meaning affected residents are expected to be displaced for an undetermined period of time. Residents who need to enter the building to retrieve personal items are being asked to contact the property management company or the owner.
Affected residents are encouraged to contact their insurance provider as soon as possible.
The Edson Fire Department thanks all the supporting agencies that played a role in the quick mitigation of this incident.
