The Whitecourt Wolverines have taken a 2-1 series lead over the Fort McMurray Oil Barons after winning game three 4-1 on Tuesday, March 25.
Tim Kim opened the scoring for the Wolverines 7:45 into the first period. Kim’s first goal of the series was assisted by Jalen Bianchet.
At the end of the first period, the Whitecourt Wolverines had outshot the Fort McMurray Oil Barons 11-4 and took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission.
The Wolverines then outshot the Oil Barons 11-9 in the second period but neither team was able to score a goal.
Ewan McPherson and Xavier Lacoste scored nine seconds apart in the third period to put the Wolverines up 3-0. McPherson’s goal was his first of the series, scored at 2:34 and was assisted by Jack Pollock. McPherson also picked up the assist on Lacoste’s second goal of the series, scored at 2:43.
Ryan Arnold got the Oil Barons on the board by scoring his first goal of the series, unassisted, at 14:46, to make it 3-1.
Dylan Ruptash secured the 4-1 win for the Wolverines with a power play goal at 16:12. Marcello Giorgi and Quentin Bourne picked up the assists on Ruptash’s third goal of the series.
The Whitecourt Wolverines outshot the Fort McMurray Oil Barons 11-8 in the third period and 33-21 in total.
Oil Barons’ goaltender Vincent Fillion made 29 saves on the 33 shots he faced.
Whitecourt Wolverines’ goaltender Zac Onyskiw made 20 saves on the 21 shots he faced in support of the Wolverines’ victory.

With this win, the Wolverines have taken a 2-1 series lead over the Fort McMurray Oil Barons.
Game four is scheduled for Wednesday, March 26, in Fort McMurray and game five is scheduled for Friday, March 28, back in Whitecourt.
