Officials with the Town of Whitecourt have received grant funding to help with the costs associated with upgrading the Whitecourt transit system.
Administration says their application to the Rural Transit Solutions Fund was approved and they have received $2,364,584.00, which covers 80 per cent of the $2,955,730.00 project cost.
Officials say this funding will be used for upgrades to the Whitecourt transit system, including:
- The replacement of the Dial-A-Bus.
- The purchase of a transit bus.
- The addition of new, or relocation of existing bus stops and shelters.
- Replacing traffic signals.
- Replacing or adding sidewalks or pathways leading to bus stops.
Officials say the town’s required contribution is available through the Fleet Replacement Plan and the Infrastructure Reserve.
Administration says a separate application through the Canada Public Transit Fund was also successful and the town will be receiving $697,030.00 which can be used to cover up to 40 per cent of the costs outlined in the transit capital plan. Officials say this funding will be provided through payments of $69,703.00 over the next 10 years.
With this funding secured, town officials have given the administration the go-ahead and the authority to execute the agreements, payment claims, reports and other documents related to the Rural Transit Solutions Fund on behalf of the town.
