Barrhead RCMP are warning residents of an active phone scam in the community involving the use of artificial intelligence.
Police say these scams involve an AI-generated voice claiming to be a family member who was involved in a collision and may be injured. The call then transfers to an alleged lawyer who says the family member can avoid criminal charges if payments are received for the damaged vehicle.
Mounties stress: DO NOT SEND MONEY after receiving one of these calls. If you are still in doubt, contact the family member directly to verify their safety.
Residents who receive these calls are being told to hang up, block the number and report it to the RCMP immediately by calling 780-674-4848.
Any residents who believe they may have been a victim of this scam are also being asked to contact the RCMP as soon as possible.
