Multiple roads in downtown Whitecourt will be closed for the Santa Clause Parade on Saturday, Nov. 16.
Town officials say at 5:15 p.m., 50 and 52 Avenues will be closed between 49 and 52 street and 49 and 52 Streets will be closed between 50 and 52 Avenues, with the parade taking place between 5:30. And 7:00 p.m.
Whitecourt residents are strongly encouraged to attend the Christmas Tree Light Up at the Town Office in support of the Whitecourt Food Bank before securing their spot downtown to watch the parade.
Gayle Mombourquette, Christmas Committee Chair, says the increase in people accessing the Food Bank is even more noticeable as the holiday season approaches.
“This is our busiest time of year,” says Mombourquette. “Clients accessing the food bank has increased even since last year. We are seeing a lot more people using the Food Bank and we are also seeing a lot less donations overall coming in.”
Residents are encouraged to bring donations of baby food and non-perishable food items such as “pop-top” soups and raviolis that are relatively quick and easy to prepare and eat. Mombourquette says residents can also get involved by purchasing bulbs at the Christmas Tree Light Up.
“People can purchase bulbs at the town office for $20.00 per bulb and all that money goes back to the Food Bank as well.”
Donations of toothpaste, deodorant, shampoo and soap also go a long way this time of year.
“Toiletries are also really big at Christmas time,” Mombourquette explains. “We try and do that little bit of extra stuff for people accessing the Food Bank to give them that little bit of extra.”
Mombourquette also extended her thanks to the citizens of Whitecourt, saying their donations go a long way and make a big difference.
“We understand that times are tough for everyone but every little bit helps. You don’t have to give a whole lot to be able to contribute. If every person gave a can of soup that would go a long way.”
