The federal government has announced more than $172 Million in contributions and low-cost loans through the Affordable Housing Fund (AHF) to assist with the construction and repair of more than 4200 affordable homes in Alberta, including 22 shelter units for the town of Whitecourt.
According to the release, Whitecourt will be receiving $806,820 for 22 shelter units. This funding was provided to repair an existing project, but due to the sensitive nature of these shelter projects and the vulnerable populations they serve, officials were unable to share details at this time.
Randy Boissonnault, Member of Parliament for Edmonton Centre, Alberta and Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Official Languages made the announcement on Tuesday, July 23, on behalf of the Minister for Housing, Infrastructure and Communities, Sean Fraser.
Mr. Boissonnault says he believes this funding will go a long way to supporting the most vulnerable members of the community.
“We need smart solutions to solve the affordable housing crisis,” says Boissonnault. “Through the Affordable Housing Fund, we are building and repairing over 4000 homes in Alberta. By working with our communities, we are investing $172 million to support those who need social and affordable housing the most.”
While Minister Fraser was not able to attend in person, he did provide a statement.
“Everyone deserves a place to call their own and the Affordable Housing Fund is one way we’re helping make that a reality for Canadians,” says Fraser, “We will keep investing in affordable housing projects like the ones announced today, and working with partners across the country, to end the housing crisis.”
The announcement for this funding took place at the Edmonton Veterans Village which is a 20-unit facility operated by the Homes for Heroes Foundation that received $500,000 through the AHF and was opened in November of 2021.
