With high temperatures continuing to loom over the province, the Town of Barrhead has activated water restrictions in an attempt to manage demand and replenish water reserves.
Effective immediately, Town officials say the Bulk Water Station will be closed until Saturday, July 13. Residents who have cisterns are being advised to visit the Bulk Water Fill Stations in Mayerthorpe, Fort Assiniboine, Whitecourt, Westlock or Neerlandia.
Effective Friday, July 12, The Barrhead Rotary Splash Park will only be operating from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
However, officials with the Barrhead Regional Aquatic Centre say they will be offering free swimming at the following times:
- Friday, July 12 – 5:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
- Saturday, July 13 – 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
- Sunday, July 14 – 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Residents are also being asked to restrict non-essential water usage such as watering lawns, washing cars and filling pools.
As part of these restrictions, year-round municipally supplied water from a hose, pipe, sprinkler or permanent irrigation system is permitted only between the hours of 7:00 p.m., to 9:00 a.m. Experts recommend watering in the early morning as it reduces water loss from evaporation and maximizes the benefits to grass and other plants.
Officials note that there are some exceptions to the restrictions, including:
- Using a watering can, hose with a nozzle or a drip irrigation system control the amount of water used without wasting excess water.
- Use of recreational sprinklers and water toys.
- Watering newly laid sod and seeded lawns.
- Maintaining landscaping when there is a risk that a new tree, shrub, or another type of vegetation will perish.
The Town is thanking residents for their cooperation and understanding as officials work to ensure a sustainable water supply for all residents.
