Seniors Week will be celebrated in Whitecourt next month.
During their regular meeting on Monday, May 13, Whitecourt Council agreed to recognize the week of June 3 – 8 as Seniors Week and will have council members attend the Kick-off Pancake Breakfast, Intergenerational Cook-off as well as the Dinner and Entertainment Evening.
“What a great event, I know that our youth are really excited about the opportunity of being involved in the intergenerational cook-off so that’s kinda cool,” said Councillor Derek Schlosser before putting forth a motion to authorize council members to attend the events, which passed unanimously.
Town officials say Seniors Week provides an opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate the contributions made to the community by seniors and will be filled with activities aimed at bringing youths and seniors together.
Mayor Tom Pickard shared a quick story about how he has watched families in Whitecourt grow over the last decade.
“We were a community that occasionally had three generations in town,” says Pickard. “And in the last 10 years, many many four generations families which is something unique to Whitecourt.”
Almost all of the events during Seniors Week will be free to attend, with the exception of Bingo and the Dinner and Entertainment Evening.
Bingo will be taking place at the Seniors Circle on Tuesday, June 4, and is being hosted by the Whitecourt Seniors Circle. Doors open at 5:00 p.m. and the first game is set to begin at 6:45 p.m.
Organizers say bingo also runs throughout the year with the exception of July and August with varying costs.
The Dinner and Entertainment night will be held on Saturday, June 8, also at the Seniors Circle.
