A special event was held on June 26 in Edson to help celebrate the uniqueness and diversity of Edson’s residents.
In recognition of June Pride Month, Parkland GSA students held a BBQ and painted a mural at Kinsmen Park.
“The Town of Edson is proud to support this initiative and to allow the students to express their support for inclusivity of all residents regardless of how they identify,” says Edson Mayor Kevin Zahara. “One of council’s key pillars in our Strategic Plan is creating a connected community that is safe and inclusive. We want everyone to know you are welcome in this community.”
This Pride event, according to organizers, marks a significant milestone in Edson history to promote equal rights for all people, regardless of sexuality or gender identity and was supported by the Town of Edson, FCSS, RCMP, University of Alberta, local business owners and more.
“The Pride Progress Flag was chosen for the mural as it is the symbol of the LGBTQIA+ community and by displaying the flag, we hope to convey the message that wherever you are or how you identify, you are included, welcome and safe,” states Yvonne Lorne, Family School Liaison Counsellor. “It’s a visual reminder of the struggles and oppression that people in the community have faced and continue to face, but it is also a sign of hope for how far we have come. Be free to be you.”
