With a significant snowfall forecast for the Whitecourt region in the coming days, Whitecourt RCMP is reminding motorists to prepare for winter driving.
On highways and rural roads, police say snow-covered roads, reduced visibility and icy conditions can create hazardous driving conditions. Motorists are encouraged to monitor weather and road reports, ensure vehicles are winter-ready and allow extra time to reach destinations safely.
The RCMP recommends the following winter driving tips:
- Check weather forecasts and road conditions before travelling.
- Consider postponing non-essential travel if conditions are expected to deteriorate.
- Ensure your vehicle is equipped for winter, including appropriate tires, functioning lights and a full fuel tank.
- Remove all snow and ice from windows, mirrors, headlights and taillights before driving.
- Slow down and increase your following distance to allow for longer stopping times.
- Carry a winter emergency kit with blankets, extra clothing, water, snacks, a flashlight, booster cables and a cellphone charger.
- Make sure your cellphone is charged before leaving and let someone know your travel plans if travelling longer distances.
- If you become stranded, remain with your vehicle and call for assistance when it is safe to do so.
