Edson town council has approved a new Municipal Development Plan (MDP).
Council passed the second and third readings of Municipal Development Plan Bylaw No. 2339 at its regularly scheduled meeting on Oct. 20-21.
An MDP is a planning document intended to guide community growth, development and infrastructure needs, according to the council agenda. It includes policies about future land use, sustainability, transportation, utilities and municipal facilities. The town’s current MDP was adopted in 2016, and the process to update the document began in 2025.
Development of the new plan included three rounds of public engagement. As a result of the latest round, council made a few amendments to the document before it was passed. These amendments included minor phrasing and date changes for clarity and accuracy, as well as revised symbols and visuals.
The document also outlines the vision for the town’s future in the following statement:
“Edson is a beautiful community where people, nature and opportunity thrive. With a strong and diverse local economy, an extensive network of accessible parks, trails, and recreation facilities and a lively downtown, we celebrate our people-focused mindset and strong community spirit. Our services and amenities enrich everyday life and provide opportunities for community connection.”
The statement also says the town is committed to sustaining the identity, programs, services, amenities, infrastructure and relationships that make Edson “an attractive, welcoming and safe place for people of all ages and abilities to live, work and visit,” as well as positioning itself for growth through responsible asset management.
