Albertans overwhelmingly voted to remain in Canada during last night’s historic referendum.
Unofficial results show over 1.3 million Albertans voted in favour of staying in Canada, while over 400,000 voted to pursue another binding referendum on separation.
That’s as of 7:00 this morning, with 79 per cent of voting areas counted.
Results were much closer in some electoral districts:
In Athabasca–Barrhead–Westlock, 13,684 residents voted in favour of staying in Canada while 9,666 voted to pursue separation, close to a 60-40 split.
Results were similar in Lac Ste. Anne–Parkland and West Yellowhead.
In Lac Ste. Anne–Parkland, 14,854 of 25,330 voters, about 59 per cent, voted in favour of staying, and 10,476 voted to pursue a second referendum.
In the West Yellowhead electoral district, 21,144 residents cast their vote. Of those, approximately 60 per cent (12,596) voted to stay in Canada and approximately 40 per cent (8,548) voted for separation.
In Central Peace–Notley, however, a slim majority of voters — 51 per cent — were in favour of pursuing separation. Of 10,313 ballots cast, only 5,041 were for option one and 5,272 were for option two.
