According to the latest Edson RCMP report, assaults in the region were higher in the start of 2026 than in the previous four years.
Between April and June of this year — Q1 for the RCMP — the Edson RCMP Detachment recorded 46 assaults, up from 27 during the same period last year. The region saw 35 assaults reported in 2024; 17 in 2023; and 25 in 2022.
Incidents of criminal harassment also appear to be remaining higher this year than in previous years, with 2025 being the exception. In Q1 this year, 23 incidents were reported, down from 25 last year. In 2024, there were only 10 incidents reported; six were reported in 2023 and seven in 2022.
Including all categories, persons crime in Edson increased by 20 per cent compared to last year, with 85 incidents reported in Q1, up from 71 in 2025 and 62 in 2022.
Break-ins, on the other hand, continued to decrease in the beginning of the year. The detachment recorded 14 break-ins in Q1, compared to 15 in 2025; 26 in 2024; 21 in 2023; and 23 in 2022.
Twelve motor vehicle thefts were reported in Q1, up from eight last year, but down from 16 in 2022.
Thefts under $5,000 fell from 47 last year to 41 this year. That’s also down from the 56 reported in 2022. Meantime, only six thefts over $5,000 were reported in Q1 this year, up slightly from four in 2022.
Overall property crime decreased by nine per cent this year compared to 2025, and by 12 per cent compared to 2022.
Town council accepted the report for information during its regularly scheduled meeting on Sept. 15.
