For the first time in seven years, a jetboat river race is returning to Whitecourt.
Hosted by the Whitecourt Riverboat Association, the River Rumble 200 takes place August 1-2, with a Show and Shine preview on July 31.
The Show and Shine runs 5-8 p.m. this Friday at the Crown and Anchor Pub. While the event is mandatory for race participants looking to register, the public is also welcome to view the boats and build excitement for race day.
Saturday’s action begins with a leg race at 10 a.m., in which competitors will race from the Riverboat Park boat launch to a beach farther up the Athabasca, before racing back.
A circuit race is scheduled for 5 p.m.
Randy Tinant, Whitecourt Riverboat Association President, says the circuit races are the best opportunity for the public to view the event, as boats will be within view for much more of the race. These circuit races can be watched from Riverboat Park, he adds.
Two circuit races are scheduled for Sunday: one at 9 a.m. and one at 2 p.m.
Admission to see the races is free, and a complimentary shuttle bus will transport attendees from a nearby parking area to the boat launch. A food concession and beer gardens will also be on site.
