A special weather statement for the Barrhead, Woodlands, Yellowhead, and Lac Ste. Anne counties, as well as the M.D. of Greenview, has been upgraded to a rainfall warning.
Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) says rain is expected to begin tonight, June 26, and become a broad area of heavy rain by tomorrow morning.
Rain is expected to continue through the weekend, with some areas seeing it stretch into next week, but confidence in that forecast is low at this time.
Total amounts are expected to reach 40 to 70 mm.
With the ground already saturated from the storm this past weekend and rainfall totals for June well above normal, officials say additional rain is likely to cause overland flooding, washouts and impacts to infrastructure and property.
For the Whitecourt, Fox Creek, Swan Hills and Edson areas, a severe thunderstorm watch is also in effect.
ECCC says conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms this afternoon and evening, which may produce strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain. These can cause flash flooding, damage to trees and buildings, and significant damage and injury, respectively.
Residents in the affected areas are reminded to avoid driving through flooded roadways.
