Whitecourt town council recently passed a bylaw to formalize its policy on crosswalk markings.
During its regular meeting on April 27, council passed Policy 31-016 — Crosswalks. The bylaw states that crosswalks will strictly follow the Whitecourt Municipal Design Standards and alterations will not be permitted.
Per the document, all crosswalks will feature white parallel lines or zebra bars, depending on their location.
Previously, the town managed requests to alter crosswalk markings for commemorative purposes on an as-requested basis.
Administration researched and reviewed these past alterations and determined, in the interest of pedestrian and vehicle safety, that no marking changes should occur.
Town council says it remains open to other ideas that local organizations may have to commemorate or raise awareness of issues or events.
