Edson residents may notice smoke today as the town conducts a hazard reduction burning north of the Hillendale subdivision.
Controlled burns are a wildfire mitigation strategy that officials say is especially helpful during the spring dip, when vegetation moisture is low and fire risk is significantly heightened.
These burns reduce accumulated dead vegetation, leaf litter and underbrush, which decreases the available fuel for potential wildfires.
Residents in the area may notice smoke during burning hours. The town assures concerned residents that all precautions are being taken to safely control the burn.
It will be monitored by the Edson Fire Department and Alberta Wildfire, who will also patrol the area afterward to ensure it’s fully extinguished.
