Fibre optic network connections are coming to over 1,500 businesses and residences in the Town of Whitecourt.
The Canadian Fibre Optics Corporation (CFOC), an Alberta-based broadband provider, announced the plans on April 20.
“I am delighted that Canadian Fiber Optics has chosen to invest millions of dollars in our town, to bring world-class fiber optics to residents and businesses, enabling different connectivity options and availability of service throughout the community,” commented Mayor Ray Hilts. “This investment supports our growing community and aids in our economic development and growth.”
The corporation says the upgrades are needed because many residences and businesses in Whitecourt still utilize outdated copper or cable infrastructure that struggles to handle today’s internet speeds.
Construction is expected to begin on select streets this month. The CFOC says there will be some resulting traffic disruptions, but roads should be restored and the network should be available by the end of the summer.
Construction updates will be available online.
