According to the 2026 Provincial Construction Program released in March, multiple transportation upgrades are planned for the Whitecourt, Fox Creek, Swan Hills, Onoway and Mayerthorpe regions.
In Whitecourt, two culvert replacements are planned on Highway 32, one 19 kilometres (km) southwest of the town and one near the town. They are in the design phase and, as part of an economic corridor, are intended to support oversized and overweight traffic.
A culvert on Highway 22 near Mayerthorpe is also slated to be replaced.
The province is also planning bridge rehabilitations for the Athabasca River Bridge on Highway 43, five km northwest of Whitecourt, and the Iosegun River Bridge 17 km southeast of Fox Creek.
Other projects planned for Fox Creek include better access management, as well as intersection improvements to the roundabout at Highway 43 and Kaybob Drive.
Economic corridor improvements are also coming to the Swan Hills area.
Alberta plans to repave 35 km of road between a point 29 km north of Swan Hills and nine km south of Highway 2, in addition to 10 km of road between points 19 km and 29 km north of the town.
Two culverts are also expected to be replaced on Highway 33 near Swan Hills. The government says these are already in the construction phase and are meant to enhance public safety.
Meantime, the Onoway region is set to receive a handful of bridge upgrades.
Toad Creek Bridge, on Highway 37, is being replaced to improve public safety. About one km of reconstruction and realignment of the highway will be part of this work.
One km east of Onoway, the CNR overpass on Highway 43 is scheduled for rehabilitation. Elsewhere, the Sturgeon River Bridge on Highway 777, near Onoway, is expected to be replaced.
The government notes, the program is subject to change due to emerging needs, changes in construction schedules or available funding.
